Mohali Takes on Trash Troubles with State-of-the-Art Processing Facility
Mohali’s waste management woes may soon be history as the Municipal Corporation unveils a 150-tonne daily capacity processing plant near Jagatpura. The facility, equipped with advanced segregation machinery and composting units, aims to tackle the city’s growing garbage crisis.
How It Works
- Segregation at Source: Households will separate wet and dry waste.
 - Composting Hub: Wet waste converted into fertilizer for city parks.
 - Recycling Push: Dry waste sorted for reuse, reducing landfill dependency.

Behind the Scenes
The ₹22 crore project, partly funded by the Smart Cities Mission, includes a network of Recycling and Management Centers (RMCs) in Sectors 71, 77, and 78. Mayor Sidhu noted, “After closing our main dump, we needed scalable solutions. This plant is just the start.”
Community Reactions
While environmentalists applaud the initiative, some residents worry about odor and transport delays. MC assures bio-filters and real-time monitoring will mitigate issues.
The Bigger Picture
If successful, Mohali could become a model for Punjab’s smaller cities. With Chandigarh watching closely, the pressure is on to turn trash into triumph—one tonne at a time.
