Mohali’s Semiconductor Lab Teams Up with ISRO to Propel Future Space Missions

In a groundbreaking collaboration that’s putting Punjab on the global space technology map, Mohali’s Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have unveiled India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessors designed for launch vehicles. Named Vikram3201 and Kalpana3201, these chips are engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of space, marking a giant leap toward self-reliance in aerospace technology.

Why This Matters
For decades, India’s space program relied on imported components for critical systems. The Vikram and Kalpana chips change that narrative. The Vikram3201, an upgrade from its 16-bit predecessor, is tailored for navigation and guidance systems in rockets, ensuring precision even under intense vibration and temperature fluctuations. Meanwhile, the Kalpana3201, built on open-source SPARC architecture, offers compatibility with global software tools while reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.

Behind the Innovation
The project was spearheaded by ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, which worked closely with Mohali’s SCL engineers. Dr. V Narayanan, ISRO Chairman, highlighted the chips’ role in future missions: “These microprocessors are not just components—they’re symbols of India’s growing prowess in cutting-edge R&D.”

Local Impact, Global Ambitions
Mohali’s SCL, already a hub for semiconductor research, is now poised to attract global aerospace partnerships. Officials hint at plans to scale production, potentially positioning Punjab as a key player in the global space tech supply chain. For Punjab’s youth, this could mean a surge in high-skilled job opportunities in fields like embedded systems and aerospace engineering.

What’s Next?
ISRO plans to integrate these chips into upcoming missions, including the Gaganyaan crewed spaceflight. With India eyeing lunar exploration and deep-space projects, Mohali’s innovation ensures the nation’s rockets will fly high—on homegrown tech.
